How do I know mods are safe? Will they screw up my game? Will they give me a virus?
As long as you stick to "respectable" mod websites (everything listed here is respectable) and/or well known authors, the chance of anything happening are slim to none. Even if you go "off the beaten path" to find mods, the chances are still extremely slim.
Also, most mods cannot permanently screw up Morrowind. They could possibly screw up your current saved game, but you can also just use a backup. Anything that screws up Morrowind is (most likely) temporary, and will almost always stop when you disable the mod.
That being said, you should always do the following before installing any mod:
- Backup your saves (either all of them, or just a few).
- Backup your Morrowind.ini (only if the mod is changing that)
- Backup your Textures, Icons, Meshes, Sound, Music, etc. folders (again, only if the mod is REPLACING any of these)
