Beautifying Morrowind

A quick guide to enhancing Vardenfell

By Valve Assassin

The Opening Statements!

Ahoy hoy! Let me explain this guide here real quick. I dig Morrowind, a lot, but I think even the most hardcore fan

has to admit that vanilla Morrowind has ugly, muddy textures, blocky models and is generally devoid of any ambient

effects what-so-ever. No offense Bethesda, but it's the truth.

This guide is here to help you end all that. I will give you links to several ambience and visual enhancing mods, then give

you some photographic evidence as well as "before and after" shots to help you decide if you want to "beautify!" Morrowind.

FIRST!

Get the Morrowind FPS Optimizer. Not only can it help optimize your FPS, there are other

options to make Morrowind much prettier, such as being able to make the view distance

up to 3x the default max (warning: FPS Killer!) and, my favorite, enabling ATI Trueform.

The Suspects!

Here they are, the guilty parties and links to there websites:

Model Enhancements

Note: If there is no direct link you'll be linked to some other Morrowind Mod Databse, you'll have to search for the mod.

Better Bodies/Better Heads

Guilty Parties: Better Bodies:Neuman and Crew \ Better Heads: Anthrax, Gorg, MotokiMO (thanks)

Excellent work done on replacing the blocky, ugly models done by Bethesda (sorry guys).

Check out the pics below, I censored it for the squeemish.

Requires: None

Note: The body model in the picture below is actually a beta released by one of the modders at the forum.

A new version of Better Bodies is nearing completion and should (crosses fingers) be released soon.

NPC Replacer

Guilty Party: Zero the Hero

An alternative to Better Heads, and actually the one I use at the moment.

Requires: None

Female Shirt Pack

Guilty Party: Avenger

Now you can tell when a persons a woman from 100 yards! or something. A definite plus in the clothing department!

Requires: None

Female Pants

Guilty Party: Prosey

Similar to the shirt pack, but for pants. Now females don't have to carry around an extra package.

Requires: None

Various Robe Replacers and Enhancers

Guilty Party: Canadian Ice, HG, Lillia, etc.

Sorry I can't be more specific, but I haven't downloaded any of these. Appear to make robes on females more

feminine as well as adding a few custom robes. Should be good stuff.

Requires: None?

Sharpened Weapons/Armor/Clothes

Guilty Party: Jake the Snake

Replaces Bethesda textures with sharper ones by Jake the Snake on all Weapons, Armor and Clothing.

Requires: None

Texture Packs

Morrowind Visual Pack V2.11 and V2.2 "Nature Pack"

Guilty Party: Zuldazug, Raptre, Lord Gabryael and Ayse

Updates the muddy textures to a higher resolution and higher quality.

grass atually looks like grass! AMAZING!

Requires:None

Fantasy Colored Morrowind

Guilty Party: Brash

Another texture pack, this one with a brightly colored theme. I've heard it reminds people of old school NES games

and I've also heard that it burns some people retinas. Different Strokes you know? A quality alternative anyways

Requires: None

Landscape Remix

Guilty Party: Albedo

A Texture pack more along the lines of Morrowind VP/Nature pack then Fantasy Colors. Less extensive then

MVP, and doesn't appear to be as high a resolution. If you MVP gives you performance problems you might

want to consider this one instead.

Requires:None

Flora and Fauna

Varieties of Trees

Guilty Party: Ayse's, models done by Dracus, LadyE, JDooby & N'Dib

Gorgeous forest placed in a few places around morrowind. Stunning really, but hard on performance

This link also has some seasonal foliage downloads, look great.

Gardeners of Morrowind

Guilty Party: Angry Porcupine Studios, models by Dracus, LadyE, JDooby & N'Dib

An ambitious project to replace all tree's in Vardenfell. It's still a work in progress, but allready

the Ascadian Isle Region is gorgeous to look at. Can't wait for it to be completed.

Requires: None

New Tree's Replacer

Guilty Party: Zero the Hero

Similar to Gardeners of Morrowind, replaces trees throughout Ascadian Isle Region with previously mentioned

tree models. Should be good stuff, if higher end

Requires: None?

General Ambience

Atmospheric Sound Effects

Guilty Party: Duncan

Do get this, even if you don't want anything else here. It adds so

much to the ambience of Morrowind, I'd hate to be without it.

Window Lights

Guilty Party: ModMan

Ambience is in the little things, and this mod is great for that. Adds lights

to windows at night all over Vardenfell.

The Lighting Mod, Complete

Guilty Party: Sensei

Tweaks the lighting all over morrowind. Affects sneaking and theiving skills, while adding

much ambience to dungeons and indoors. I haven't played but I hear it's quality

Requires: Tribunal

Realistic Color Config 4 Morrowind

Guilty Party: Daerk

Came highly recommended. I used it and it looked nice enough, but it disabled my fog.

Requires: None

Ring Texture Fix

Guilty Party: Random Name

Adds the textures Bethesda intended to have on the rings, but forgot to enable.

More of a bug fix really, but helps out aesthetically. Get it.

Requires: None

True Gold

Guilty Party: FrostByte

Replaces the dull gold texture with a new texture based on Roman coins, I think. Either way it looks nice.

Requires: Nonde

Real Signs

Guilty Party: Matthias Kath

Replaces the arcane text on signposts with english text in a Morrowind-esque font. Nice if you don't like

having to run right up to a sign to read it.

Requires: None

Water 2.0

Guilty Party: FalkinBlue

Changes the water to be more blue and less muddy.

Requires: None

I think that's just about it for the essentials. Bare in mind I don't have Bloodmoon or Tribunal, so while I've seen a few

that require those that look quite nice (one that adds more travelers to Vardenfell looks cool), I can't try them myself

and can't vouch for their quality. If you have any Bloodmoon or Tribunal mods (or other Morrowind mods I missed) that should be added,

and you can assure me that they are quality, I'll add them. Or, if you happen to be the author of one of these mods and wish to correct

some information or send me a newer or better link, feel free to do so. Just send your Emails to Nevermind10000@bolt.com

The Evidence!

Note that not all mods have pictures up yet. Hopefully I'll get them ALL up someday.

Before and After

A few notes:

Vanilla Morrowind on left, Enhanced on right

Vanilla Morrowind is a clean install with only 3 modifications to it,

1. Max FPS changed to 75

2. Screenshots turned on (duh)

3. Mod used to get rid of troublesome CharGen notes

Enhanced Morrowind has these mods

FPS was turned on, but after resizing the pics you can hardly read it. So I'll just say this,

These mods DID negatively affect performance, upwards of 15 FPS in places.

Beauty can be rather taxing at times but I found it worth the cost

Conclusion!

Morrowind can be a very beautiful game, but only after much downloading and sacrficing performance. Of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder

and maybe you find a higher Frame rate more beautiful than the mods recommended here. Your choice my friends, I for one will keep my forests
